This semester I've been taking a graduate level class on composition in
art and as part of the requirements I've had to create a piece using a
grid as the primary focal point of the composition. Given my love for
all things Egyptian, I decided to go ahead and take some recognizable
elements of the ancient culture and "digitize" them using pieces of
Plexiglas and paint to color the "pixels." To start with I used larger
blocks to represent less detailed and background elements and worked up
to smaller darker blocks to abstract the "lines" of the Udjat eye. In
this way I'm hoping to create the grid in three dimensions and maintain
the original symbol as a subconscious element or one which defines
itself if the title or background material is known.
