In working with 3d to create characters and other scenes much of what
is there appears very technical at first glance, and while much truly
is technical based it's not the tool that makes the art but the artist
behind the tool. It is his means to create worlds no differently than a
painter with his oils and canvas or Photoshop. I was reading on
CGChannel earlier today an article about "Flushed Away" and I found
this quote apty sums up the dichotomy of virtual tools and art.
Tools like Photoshop, Maya and Vue don’t create the
landscapes by the pushing of a button. It’s the artist’s understanding
of how to use the tools most creatively and efficiently that makes a
successful Matte Painter. That comes from understanding what is form,
light and perspective. You can only really learn those from studying
fine arts. -Ronn Brown
I think that much of the "art" of 3d software is lost in the button
mentality that those who see CG think of or on the little windows we
artists use to manipulate our virtual canvas. As Ronn said, it's not
the tools that create the art, it's the artists who use the tools that
create the art. |
